Train What's Yours
Not every difficult and dangerous thing is suitable for training, but only that which is conducive to success in achieving the object of our effort.
— Epictetus, Discourses 1.1.12
In the gym, we often chase intensity for intensity's sake, pushing ourselves to the brink with every workout. But Epictetus reminds us that not all hardship serves our true purpose. The goal isn't just to suffer; it's to train intelligently, to build resilience and capability where it genuinely counts for our progress.
Your body, your effort, your mindset—these are the tools within your control. Focus your energy on refining these, rather than just enduring whatever comes your way. Direct your training towards the skills and strengths that will make you a better athlete and a more capable person, both inside and outside the box.
Today's challenge: Today, identify one specific skill or movement you want to improve, and dedicate focused, deliberate effort to it during your workout, rather than just going through the motions.
