What it is

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a strength-and-conditioning methodology built around three principles: functional movement (squats, presses, pulls, carries — movements your body was built for), constant variance (no fixed cycles, no predictable progressions — your body adapts to new demands every day), and high-intensity effort (you work at the edge of what you can sustain, scaled to your level).

The goal is to build work capacity across broad time and modal domains — the ability to do more, across more kinds of physical work, for longer than you could before.

A CrossFit class runs 60 minutes: warm-up, strength or skill segment, a workout (the WOD), and cool-down. Every movement scales up or down, which is why beginners and lifelong athletes can train in the same room on the same workout at the same time.

Anatomy of a class

60 minutes. Five parts.

  1. Introduction (2–3 min): Your coach previews the workout and flags anyone new or returning from injury.
  2. Warm-up (10 min): General movement prep plus specific drills for the day's lifts.
  3. Strength or skill (15–20 min): Heavy lifts, gymnastics skills, or barbell technique.
  4. The WOD (15–25 min): The conditioning workout — could be short and intense, could be longer and paced. Every class has a measurable target.
  5. Cool down + accessory (5–10 min): Mobility, core, or accessory strength to close the session.

We cap every class at 15 athletes. That's non-negotiable. It's the number we've found keeps every member on the coach's radar without slowing the room down.

Owners who train where you train.

In-house programming

Written by Megan Markee, our head programmer and a 2× CrossFit Games Semifinalist. Constantly varied, not cycled. Not a random WOD. Purposefully designed by someone who competes at the Semifinals level and trains it herself.

Beginners, competitors, and retirees train in the same room. Every movement scales. The coach handles the scaling with you.

New to CrossFit

Start with Foundations.

If you're new to CrossFit or new to training in general, your starting point is a free No Sweat Intro — 45 minutes with a coach to tour the gym, talk through goals, and get matched to the right starting program. From there, most new members move through our Foundations on-ramp — a structured series of one-on-one sessions that teach you the core CrossFit movements before you join group classes.

CrossFit FAQ

Common questions.

Is CrossFit safe?
CrossFit is as safe as any sport when coached well. Every class at Alpine has a CF-L2 certified coach watching the room, scaling movements, and cueing technique in real time.
Do I need to be in shape before I start?
No. Most Alpine members started with zero CrossFit experience. The movements scale down as far as they need to.
How often should I come per week?
Three to four classes per week is the sweet spot. Twice works for maintenance. Five to six for competitive athletes.
Do you program the same workouts as other CrossFit gyms?
No. Alpine writes its own in-house by Megan Markee, our head programmer and a 2× CrossFit Games Semifinalist.
How many people are in a class?
We cap every CrossFit class at 15 athletes.
