Welcome the Heavy Burden

Welcome the Heavy Burden

Difficulties are things that show what people are. For the future, in case of any difficulty, remember that God, like a gymnastic trainer, has matched you with a rough antagonist.

— Epictetus, Discourses 1.24.1

When the barbell feels heavier than expected, your first instinct is to negotiate. You look at the clock, adjust your grip, or wonder if today is just an off day. But Epictetus reminds us that the resistance is not an interruption; it is the sparring partner you signed up for. The bar doesn't care about your mood.

Every tough round or stubborn weight is testing whether your philosophy holds up when things get uncomfortable. Stop wishing for a lighter load and start building shoulders that can carry it. When you face that wall today, smile at the opponent.

Today's challenge: Do not drop weight on your barbell today because it feels heavy; instead, pause for two seconds at the bottom and finish the set.
