The Present Moment

That burning sensation in your lungs, the heavy bar, the clock ticking down.

The Present Moment

Do not disturb yourself by picturing your life as a whole; do not embrace at once all the troubles which are likely to befall you, but address each present trouble as it arises, and say, 'Can I not endure this?'

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 8.36

That burning sensation in your lungs, the heavy bar, the clock ticking down. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the entire workout, to dread the rounds ahead, or to replay past failures. But the Stoics remind us that our power lies only in this single, unfolding moment.

Don't let your mind race to the finish line or dwell on the reps you missed yesterday. Focus on the breath you're taking right now, the muscle contraction happening in this instant. Can you endure this rep, this second? You'll find you almost always can.

Today's challenge: Today, during your toughest set, pick one specific moment — like the bottom of a squat or the last few seconds of a burpee — and commit to being fully present for it, no matter how uncomfortable.
