Master Your Impulses
That burning sensation in your lungs, the heavy barbell, the clock ticking down.
Master Your Impulses
If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.
— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 8.47
That burning sensation in your lungs, the heavy barbell, the clock ticking down. These are just external facts. What truly causes distress isn't the thing itself, but your internal reaction to it. Your mind's interpretation, your impulse to quit, that's where the struggle really lies.
You have the power to revoke that estimate, that impulse, at any moment. The discomfort is real, but your judgment of it as 'unbearable' or 'too hard' is a choice. Today, choose to reframe that judgment and push through.
Today's challenge: When you hit a wall in today's workout, pause for one breath, acknowledge the discomfort, and then consciously choose to keep moving for five more seconds.
