Effort, Not Outcome
How often do we hold back, hedging our bets with half-hearted attempts?
Effort, Not Outcome
Tentative efforts lead to tentative outcomes. Therefore, give yourself fully to your endeavors. Decide to construct your character through excellent actions and determine to pay the price of a worthy goal.
— Epictetus, Discourses
How often do we hold back, hedging our bets with half-hearted attempts? We fear failure, or perhaps the sheer discomfort of giving everything we have. But Epictetus reminds us that anything less than full commitment yields only partial results—in the gym, in our work, in our lives. The effort itself is the forge of character, not just a means to an end.
Today, consider where you might be holding back. That last rep, that extra push, that uncomfortable conversation. The outcome is not entirely yours to control, but the quality of your effort absolutely is. Commit fully to the task at hand, knowing that the real reward is the person you become in the process.
Today's challenge: During today's workout, pick one movement and commit to giving it 100% of your focused effort, regardless of the score on the whiteboard.
