Control What You Give

We act as though the barbell, the clock, or the heavy workout is the source of our suffering.

Control What You Give

Today I escaped from the crushing burden of anxiety, or rather, I put it out of my own heart, for it was not outside me, but in my own thoughts.

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 9.39

We act as though the barbell, the clock, or the heavy workout is the source of our suffering. We stare at the whiteboard and let dread accumulate before we even unrack the bar. The weights themselves are neutral steel; they only weigh what gravity tells them to.

The real weight is the story you tell yourself about how hard it's going to be. Drop the anticipation of pain and you are left only with the present rep. When you stop fighting your own thoughts, you realize you have enough strength for what is right in front of you.

Today's challenge: Stop negotiating with the whiteboard today and just execute the first movement without a sigh.

Workout of the Day

WOD coming soon — check the whiteboard at the gym this morning, or grab the day's class plan from your coach.
