Action Over Distraction

It's easy to get overwhelmed, whether by a daunting WOD or the sheer volume of tasks on your plate.

Action Over Distraction

Don't let your imagination be crushed by life in its entirety. Don't let your mind dwell on all the various troubles that may befall you, but in each instance of present trouble ask yourself: 'What is there in this that is unbearable and beyond my endurance?'

— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 8.36

It's easy to get overwhelmed, whether by a daunting WOD or the sheer volume of tasks on your plate. We forecast future discomfort, imagine all the ways things could go wrong, and sometimes, this mental noise paralyzes us before we even begin.

But the Stoics remind us that the 'entirety' is never the present. Focus on the single rep, the next step, the immediate challenge. Break down the overwhelming into manageable pieces and ask yourself what this moment demands. You'll find that what's truly unbearable is rarely the present action itself, but the anxiety about what's to come.

Today's challenge: Today, when faced with a tough movement or a big task, mentally break it into its smallest component and just do that one thing.
