October 2020 Female Athlete of the Month – Michelle Carlock

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT? WHO OR WHAT GOT YOU STARTED?
A: 2.5 years, I was very overweight and depressed. I looked into what kind of fitness programs would give me the quickest results and decided CF was something I needed to try. I loved it immediately & lost 100lbs in my first year.

Q: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF: (FAMILY, CAREER, HOBBIES, INTERESTS)
A: I used to be a paralegal and just hated working a 8-5 job. I quit and started taking care of kids & other people’s pets. I’ve never regretted that decision. The kids I nanny are my family and I love them more than anything in the world. In my free time I love to read & am writing a book. I’m a super nerd and love StarWars, Harry Potter, & comics, especially Batman. My dad wanted a boy, so he taught me to love sports-especially baseball & football.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY AT ALPINE CROSSFIT?
A: How do I pick?! It has to be either the weightlifting competition, which was my first community event, or the day I finally lifted over 200# on my back squat.

Q: WHAT WAS YOUR WORKOUT REGIMEN BEFORE JOINING ALPINE?
A: CF, but only 3x a week. I had also recently completed a starting strength program.

Q: HOW HAS CROSSFIT AFFECTED YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?
A: How hasn’t it?! It’s given me a newfound confidence. I know now that I can do whatever I set my mind to. This is definitely the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life and that gives you a certain peace & comfort that you can tackle any situation.

Q: IF YOU COULD WRITE A BOOK, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
A: I’m actually writing one! I lost my 11 year old son, Taylor, to cancer. I want to write a book that both honors him and helps families to cope during their journey.

Q: WHAT CATEGORY WOULD YOU BE LEAST EXCITED/MOST EXCITED TO SEE ON JEOPARDY?
A: Geography or Science, I like more opinion based subjects or subjects you can be creative with like English & Psychology.

Q: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST WORKOUT, AND WHAT DID YOU THINK AFTER DOING IT?
A: It was a partner workout and it had to hold a plank while my partner did wall-balls. We were both brand new and if you stopped your partner had to start over. I didn’t want to stop so I passed out and gave myself a bloody nose from the fall. I came back the next day so I guess I thought it was pretty good!

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE WOD?
A: Favorite is anything strongman-yoke, deadlifts, bench press, and back squats. Least favorite-running & gymnastics.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEWBIE JUST GETTING STARTED AT ALPINE CROSSFIT?
A: Show up and do your best! CF has a way of humbling even the most experienced athlete, so learn to laugh at yourself & have fun!
