May 2020 Male Athlete of the Month – Sean Sands

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING CROSSFIT? WHO OR WHAT GOT YOU STARTED?
A: I believe I started doing CrossFit in 2010 when we moved to South Dakota. I started CrossFit because I thought it would be the best type of workout to help with being a firefighter.

Q: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF: (FAMILY, CAREER, HOBBIES, INTERESTS)
A: I’ve been married for 11 years, we have 2 kids that are 11 and 9. I’m a firefighter for the city of Lafayette in Boulder county and have been with them for the last 7 years. I started my career as a volunteer firefighter back in 2003. When I’m not at work I enjoy spending time with my family being outdoors and doing things such as camping, biking, hiking, skiing/ snowboarding or paddling around lakes.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY AT ALPINE CROSSFIT?
A: Watching my kids start CrossFit and competing with my kids.

Q: WHAT WAS YOUR WORKOUT REGIMEN BEFORE JOINING ALPINE?
A: I had a couple adjustable dumb bells that I used in my basement to lift and just did what ever for the day, no plan at all. I was always too intimidated to go to any gym.

Q: HOW HAS CROSSFIT AFFECTED YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?
A: I feel CrossFit has better prepared me to do my job and also to be more active with my family.

Q: IF YOU COULD WRITE A BOOK, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
A: How to procrastinate and get away with it

Q: WHAT CATEGORY WOULD YOU BE LEAST EXCITED/MOST EXCITED TO SEE ON JEOPARDY?
A: Pretty much any category that comes on jeopardy are the ones that I’m least excited about. A few that I would be excited to see would be topics such as “words that rhyme with dog”, “colors that end in urple”, “things that you shouldn’t put in your mouth” and “where are you now”

Q: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST WORKOUT, AND WHAT DID YOU THINK AFTER DOING IT?
A: My memory can’t remember what I did yesterday, but it was a workout from the main site, and I’m sure I thought why the hell am I doing this, just like every workout during the quarantine. So my opinion has not changed over the 10 years of doing this.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE WOD?
A: Isabel is one of my least favorite, and I like any that is a long grind.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE MOVEMENTS?
A: Besides burpees I would say my least favorite movement would be Snatches, and my favorite would be Cleans.

Q: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A NEWBIE JUST GETTING STARTED AT ALPINE CROSSFIT?
A: I feel that walking into any new gym is very intimidating. It’s hard for me but I would tell them to not worry about what others are doing, especially with all the crazy movements that are done at any given time. I would let them know that everyone didn’t just magically become good at CrossFit, athletes have put in hours and years to get where they are now.
